Wildcard char- acters (*,?) are supported. If you are using wildcards with tagged files and have an ambiguity in filenames, an error message displays. Copy If you wish to rename a file or group of files during a Copy, add the filename to the end of the selected path using normal DOS syntax. Move/Rename can be used for either operation. If the target is a valid Path, the file(s) will be moved. If the target is a valid Path\filename, the file(s) will be moved and renamed. If the target is a unique filename, the file(s) will be renamed. -continued- UTILITIES - Backup, Xcopy/Xmove Backup passes the selected file(s) to the DOS backup command which must be in the path. File compression can be hooked in at DOS prompt to access your own archive utility program. Xcopy automatically creates the subdirectory structure on the target drive as it copies the file(s). Xcopy will not split files between diskstherefore it cannot be used on a file larger than the target disk. Xcopy is an excellent altern- ative to backup because the files are immediately executable from the Xcopied disk(s). Use Xcopy instead of DOS's diskcopy to copy a disk with subdirectories to a disk of a different type or one that already contains data. Xmove removes the files from the source drive and copies them, with directory structure, to the target drive. -continued- UTILITIES - Alter Attributes Date & Time lets you change the time and date stamp of single or tagged files. Each gives you the option to leave it the same, change to a specified time or date, or change it to the current time or date. Attributes More than one bit can be "On" in any file. Attributes are: (n)ormal-no bits are on (h)idden-can't see this file from a DOS directory (s)ystem-required by DOS-can't be moved or renamed(r)ead/only-can't be modified while this bit is on(a)rchive-file has changed since last backup. Tree86 provides three methods for altering the file attributes. See next screen. CAUTION: Be certain you understand consequences ofeach type of attribute change. -continued- UTILITIES - Alter Attributes (continued) Change ON bits only Any bits set "On" in the attribute mask which are "Off" in the file will be turned "On." This is the default method, a logical (OR) operation. Change OFF bits only Any bits set "Off" in the attribute mask which are "On" in the file will be turned "Off." This is a logical (AND) operation. The two previous methods are useful for a group oftagged files with different attribute bits set. Change ALL bits All bits in the file will be set the same as the attribute mask. If this method is used with a group of files, all their attributes will be set identically. -continued- UTILITIES - Print Tree86 can print the tree structure or the current list of files. This operation may be canceled while printing by pressing [Esc]. You can print the File at Cursor only if DOS PRINT.COM was loaded before Tree86. File at Cursor will print the contents of a file in the background while you use your computerfor other operations. While printing, you may also submit additional files for printing. Cancel Print Queue will cancel the file currently being printed and any files waiting to be printed. -continued- UTILITIES - Search for Text Tree86 will search a group of tagged files for a user defined text string. Tree86 filters the target files as it looks which allows searching of word processed document files. The search option accepts the following parameters: [/*] defeats the document filter so Tree86 searches an unfiltered file for the text string. [/D] causes Tree86 to display the area of the file containing the text string. Once displayed [/E] opens ALT/edit in the location of the found text string. -continued- UTILITIES - Resource Memory, Format Resource Memory shows the types of memory with amounts available. It also shows what is in memory by accessing the MAP86 program. Format Disk formats floppy disks. An error message displays if you select a non-floppy drive. Format defaults to the size of the drive, however, with most versions of DOS and types of machines, you are given the option to format to a low density disk in a high density disk drive. Once you have made your selections, press [C] to begin formatting. To quit from the DOS screen without formatting, press [Ctrl][Break]. -PgDn- FIND Files Tree86 searches the entire drive for file(s) that match any of the 4 filemasks. Excludefiles by pressing the grey [-] key not [Enter]. Duplicates Displays all the files on the drive which share the same filename. All Files Displays all the files on the drive and allows you to work on them globally across subdirectories. Backup Locates files which have not been backed up or which have changed since the last backup. Hidden & Read/Only Display all the files which have the hidden or read-only attribute bits turned "On." Branch Displays all the files in the high- lighted directory and in directories below it. -PgDn- DIRECTORY Make New Position cursor on directory under which you want to make a new one. NOTE: A new directory cannot be named the same as a file or subdirectory in the highlighted subdirectory. If you see the error message "Access Denied," the name may already be in use. Name Highlight directory name to change. Remove Deletes only empty directories. If Tree86 will not remove a directory that appears empty, check the file mask, log level, and hidden files. Cut & Paste Moves the selected directory and all its files or subdirectories. If any of the files in the subdirectories are hidden, system, or read-only files, an error message appears. To move directories among drives, first access CHANGE, Join. -continued- DIRECTORY (continued) Hide or Unhide The hidden subdirectories are indicated by a » character and are hidden from any DOS listings but their files may be accessed. Kill Directory erases a directory including any files or subdirectories contained within it. If you select the root of a hard drive, you are prompted twice for confirmation before removing all the directories and files. NOTE: This is a potentially destructive feature. Do not use this or Wipe Directory without fully understanding the consequences. Wipe Directory erases all the files in a directory and any subdirectories under it. It leaves the directory names intact. -PgDn- CHANGE Drive Displays the selected drive from memory. If the drive is not logged in memory, Tree86 reads the drive before displaying it. Use the [+] or [-] key to scroll through the logged drives. File Mask Tree86 displays only the file(s) that match the file mask. The default *.* will display all the files in the subdirectory. Attribute Display toggles the display of the file attributes "On" and "Off." Relog Drive re-reads the selected drive. You may need to Relog if the directory structure was modified from DOS or TreeDOS, if a floppy disk waschanged, if Cut & Paste was interrupted, if you quit Tree86 while drives were still Joined, etc. Unlog Drive removes a drive from memory. -continued- CHANGE Join Drives lists the specified drives on a single Tree Window for across drive operations. Access drives by pressing [Ctrl][PgDn] or [PgUp]. Cancel Join unjoins drives. Branch Log toggles the display of the highlighted part of the tree. Log Level sets the number of layers that will be displayed on the tree when this option is accessed. Default is 32. Tree86 Config accesses the program which is used to change default screen colors and settings. -PgDn- LIST This option provides a convenient way to page through the file listings in directories. List Next is the same as displaying the Tree, moving the cursor down one subdirectory, and pressing [Enter]. List Previous is the reciprocal. TAG Tag provides a versatile set of tools for marking files for group operations. To tag a single highlighted file, press the space bar. Display Tag Files displays only tagged files. Forget Untagged removes untagged files from memory so they will not be recalled by All Files Display. All Files Display displays un-tagged files while maintaining the tags. -PgDn- SORT This option redisplays the files on the screenin different orders to ease locating and tagging files. The default sort order is by filename. To change the default order press [C][T]ree86 Config. The sort order will remain the same until you select a new sort order or you quit Tree86. Fuzzy This sort finds filenames containing user specified characters. As you type, the selected filenames are instantly scrolled to the top of the screen and tagged. Any key other than a letter, number, or symbol automatically terminates the fuzzy sort. Reverse sort order toggles the subsort order between ascending and descending. -PgDn- WINDOW Pressing [W] from the File window displays the Tree window. Pressing [W] from the Tree window displays the previously listed files. Using [W] instead of [Enter] allows work previously started to be resumed because the tags and the cursor position are maintained. To log to a new subdirectory, highlight the directory and press [Enter]. From the File window the [W]indow option and [Enter] are functionally equivalent. -PgDn- VIEW View displays the contents of the file at the highlight. You can also print, write all or part to a file, find text within the file, etc. For Help when in View86, press [F1]. The view option runs an external program namedVIEW86.COM. You may substitute your own browser by copying it to the Tree86 disk or directory and using the filename VIEW86. View does not work if VIEW86 is not in the same subdirectory with Tree86. NOTE: If you have more than one copy of Tree86 on a disk, make sure to access the one in the directory with VIEW86. -PgDn- EDIT The edit option accesses ALT/edit, the pure ASCII editor that comes with Tree86. To exit ALT/edt, press [Alt][F][Q]. You may set up this option to run your own editor or word processor. See the manual to set up your editor of choice. Your editor must be in the path to work properly. Pressing [E] runs the editor named in Tree86 Config. The highlighted file in the File window is loaded when you press [E] unless your editor doesn't accept parameters. Further, if your editor requires a parameter, it will not operate from the Tree window. If another editor was named, press [Alt][E] to run ALT/edit. -PgDn- MEMORY SWAP When running a program or in TreeDOS, Tree86 swaps out code and data to minimize its overhead in conventional memory. The order of swap preference is: 1 - User defined hard drive or Ram disk To define the drive run [C][T]Tree86 Config, select [D]efault, and then press [F4]. To cause Tree86 to swap to conventional memory, select drive [Z]. 2 - Expanded memory 3 - A TEMP directory if one is assigned or the drive from which Tree86 was run if no TEMP was defined. (Skipped if a removable drive) 4 - Conventional memory -PgDn- MOUSE With DOS 3.0 or higher, the mouse cursor automatically appears if a mouse driver was installed prior to running Tree86. Using the Mouse The right button selects and executes, tags, executes defaults, and acts like an [Enter]. The left button selects. On items with a default, to make another selection, position the mouse on the other option and use the left button. In instances where keyboard input is required or allowed, the left selects, the right [Enter]s. Escape by pushing both buttons simultaneously. The scroll bar on the left of the screen facilitates up and down movement of listings. -End of File-
